The MV Veteran pulled through the Narrows around 3 p.m. Saturday. Over the next few weeks, crew members will be taking part in training on the ship as well as performing inspections and getting the boat ready for service.
The $50-million, 80-metre ferry was built by Dutch company Damen at its shipyard in Romania, and originally set sail for Newfoundland in August.
However, the vessel experienced what officials described as a "glitch" in one of its engines, and docked in Malta so representatives from the German engine manufacturer could assess the situation.
The ferry was eventually cleared to sail for Newfoundland, and was finally spotted off the coast of the island by the early morning hours on Friday.
Before docking in St. John's, it sailed past it's future home of Fogo Island and Change Islands and then by Bell Island.
A welcoming ceremony is planned in St. John's Harbour next week.
Once in operation, the MV veteran will make routine runs between Farewell and Fogo Island/Change Islands.
