N.L. electoral boundaries commission selected
The commission that will rewrite electoral boundaries in Newfoundland and Labrador has been selected by the Speaker of the House of Assembly.
Bill Matthews and Shawn Skinner, both nominated by the Progressive Conservatives, Liberal Bernard Coffey and NDP Allan Goulding will make up the commission, which will be chaired by Justice Robert Stack.
Stack, a St. John's Supreme Court judge, was appointed Monday by Chief Justice Derek Greene.
48 to 40
Premier Paul Davis wants to cut eight MHAs from the legislature in order to save the province money.
A bill passed in the House of Assembly in January to slash the members from 48 to 40.
Amendments to the bill allowed Labrador to keep four of its seats, so the loss of eight representatives will come from the island portion of the province.
Davis said he wants the commission to rewrite the province's districts within 120 days.
