On the morning of July 1, 100 years since soldiers of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment were given the order to plunge across the battlefield of Beaumont-Hamel, church bells across the province will ring out to mark that moment, one of the deadliest in Newfoundland and Labrador's history.

The Rooms has organized the Bells of Commemoration project, to begin at 8:45 a.m. NT Friday and last for approximately one minute, to serve as an auditory reminder that present-day generations still remember the First World War soldiers' sacrifice.

The provincial archives is asking any and all churches with working bells to participate, and for the social media-savvy congregations, it's asking for brief smartphone videos in order to create an online gallery so people can listen to the bells no matter their location.
