The opening of the Paul Reynolds Community Centre in the east end of St. John's has been delayed until spring.

The facility, which is replacing the aged Wedgewood Park community centre, was set to open in January — but ran into construction delays.

According to Coun. Danny Breen, the city set a construction timeline that "may have been a bit too aggressive."

He said there were also delays in getting some important equipment, like hand rails, into the building.

"That delayed our commissioning. And now we're going through that process, and we certainly don't want to speed that up," said Breen.

"We want to make sure that we do all our checks."

Construction at the centre began in 2014.

Breen said the project is still close to its budget of $32 million, despite the construction delays.

"So cost overruns are not an issue at this point."

The city said registration and rental information will be announced online once an opening date is finalized.
