Plans scrapped for waste water plant on St. John's waterfront

The company that wanted to build a controversial waste water treatment plant on the St. John's waterfront has formally dropped the idea.

On Tuesday, the province's Department of Environment and Conservation issued a release, stating Encanex has now withdrawn its proposal from the environmental assessment process.

Nova Scotia-based Encanex Environmental Oil and Gas Corp. registered the treatment plant proposal with the province in 2012.

It wanted to build a facility at Pier 17, near the city's Battery neighbourhood, to receive waste water from offshore oil operations.

It would then treat the water and release it into the sewer system. 

Battery residents signed petitions against the proposal at the time, and city councillors had asked for more information.
