Propane cost leaps by 8 cents per litre

For the second week in a row, the cost of propane used for heating took a substantial leap in price across Newfoundland and Labrador. 

The Public Utilities Board allowed vendors to increase the cost of propane by eight cents per litre. 

The change means that retailers on the Avalon Peninsula, for instance, can now charge no more than $1.111 per litre. The Northern Peninsula has the highest prices, with a ceiling of $1.168 per litre. 

Last week, amid a shortage across the island, the PUB raised prices by five cents per litre. 

The shortage was compounded by a halt in production at the Come By Chance refinery, which was linked to an island-wide power outage, as well as delays in getting supplies across the Cabot Strait on Marine Atlantic's ferries. 

The PUB, meanwhile, also increased the cost of gas by as much as one cent per litre for all grades. 

The cost of diesel is up by 2.3 cents per litre, while furnace oil is up 1.28 cents per litre.
