One youth dead, another in hospital following ATV crash near Gander

Police are investigating an ATV crash in central Newfoundland that left one youth dead and another in hospital.

In a news release, the RCMP said it received a report of a crash at approximately 5:30 p.m. NT on Monday that involved two people under the age of 16 along the Newfoundland T'Railway.

Police say a side-by-side was traveling on the trail near Joe Batts Pond, approximately 15 kilometres west of Gander.

"The ATV lost control, departed the trail and came to rest on its side," the RCMP said.

Police say the driver died at the scene and the second youth was transported to James Paton Memorial Regional Health Centre in Gander for treatment.

The investigation is ongoing and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is involved.
