Police are warning people that a polar bear may have come ashore near St. Anthony, on the tip of Newfoundland's Northern Peninsula.

RCMP said Saturday they had received a call about a sighting in the area of the Triple Falls RV Park, about eight kilometres from the town.

The park is also home to a popular licenced salmon river.

Police are advising anyone near the park to be on their guard, and to be extra cautious with children and pets.

"Conservation officers have been advised of the situation and are taking the necessary steps to actively locate the bear and secure it," the RCMP stated in a news release.
