Dozens of people flocked to Fred's Records in St. John's on Saturday to get a signed copy of The Man of a Thousand Songs, a feature-length documentary that profiles legendary Newfoundland singer-songwriter Ron Hynes.

The event was the official release of the DVD version of the film.

Hynes, who was diagnosed with throat cancer in July, was on hand for much of the afternoon to greet fans.

Tony Ploughman of Fred's Records said having him there shows how resilient the famous musician is.

"He just went through seven weeks of rigorous treatment," Ploughman said.

"To even have the strength to come down here and do this, I think is highly admirable."

The documentary features performances by Hynes, as well as intimate interviews wherein he discusses sometimes dark and personal episodes in his life, including his divorce and recovery from drug addiction.
