Teachers identified as victims of Butter Pot Park crash
Accident victims taught together at Whitbourne Youth Centre
The RCMP say a second man has died as the result of a multi-vehicle crash on the Trans-Canada Highway near Butter Pot Park on Tuesday.
Both men taught together at the Newfoundland and Labrador Youth Centre in Whitbourne.
One of the deceased, 52-year-old Randy Ralph was principal at the centre and a well-known wrestling coach.
Ralph died at the scene of the crash, around 4 p.m. Tuesday.
A second man, Shannon Pittman, 40, has died in hospital. Police said he succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday.
Pittman, originally from Raleigh on the Great Northern Peninsula, is also known as a musician.
He played with his brother in a Pink Floyd tribute band called In the Flesh.
His friend, David Norris, told CBC News on Thursday that Pittman will be "sadly missed."
"The province lost a great teacher yes, but I'll always remember him for his extraordinary talent when playing lead guitar in our band," Norris wrote on Facebook Thursday.
RCMP Cpl. Trevor O'Keefe said on Wednesday that 11 people and five vehicles were involved in the crash, and it appears the vehicles started hitting each other from behind when a Good Samaritan tried to help at the accident scene.
An injured man remains in hospital in critical condition.
Police had two accident reconstruction analysts at the scene.
