St. John's physician named Memorial's top alumnus for 2012

A St. John's doctor who formed a group to treat earthquake victims in Haiti has been named  Memorial University's 2012 Alumnus of the Year.

Dr. Andrew Furey formed Team Broken Earth — a group of doctors, nurses and other health care providers from Newfoundland and Labrador who have made six trips to Haiti since a devastating earthquake hit the impoverished country Jan. 12, 2010.

The group now includes medical professionals from across Canada. And its work now ranges from medical relief to training local medical staff, and to starting programs to combat poverty.

Memorial a big supporter

Furey said his work would not have been possible without the education and ongoing support he has received at Memorial University. 

"Memorial has been just a tremendous sponsor. Any time we've needed to lean on anyone, they've been there," said Furey. "And I can't thank them enough, and the people of Haiti can't thank them enough."

Furey was presented with his award at a university ceremony on Tuesday evening.

Lt.-Gov. and former Memorial University chancellor John Crosbie was also honoured with the J.D. Eaton Award for outstanding contributions to the university.
