A section of the Team Gushue Highway extension in St. John's that was supposed to be paved this year is being put off.

When completed, the seven-kilometre stretch will run from Kenmount Road to Pitts Memorial Drive.

Last summer, then-transportation minister Nick McGrath laid out the province's timetable for the project.

At that time he said the construction phase would be completed in 2014 and the paving would be finished in 2015.

However, David Brazil, the current transportation minister, now says that's not going to happen.

Right now, the $45-million project remains a gravel path, and the new goal is to pave about one-third of the highway — from Kenmount Road to an area near Captain Whelan Drive — by the end of the year.

Bren Quinlan, who lives near the project, is not impressed.

"They'd probably build the Taj Mahal quicker," he said.

"I would really have to see it to believe it. This has been going on so long it's really hard to believe."
