English School District confirms 6 'ugliest girl' polls

The Newfoundland and Labrador English School District confirmed on Tuesday that it is aware of five more 'ugliest girls' polls at senior and junior high schools in the province, in addition to the poll seen at a Torbay high school in December.

Polls are popping up at schools other than Holy Trinity High School in Torbay

The Newfoundland and Labrador English School District confirmed on Tuesday that it is aware of five more junior and senior high schools across the province who have dealt with 'ugliest girls' polls.

The confirmation comes in the wake of a widely publicized incident in December, when Torbay high school student Lynelle Cantwell pushed back after being featured in a poll on the website Ask.FM.

In a statement provided to CBC News, the English School District said that for the most part, schools have dealt with the issues internally, but in some cases have sought additional help from the district.

The district said police were informed of the polls by the school or another individual within the school community.

"We expect all students to be respectful of each other both in school and via social media and it is possible that school disciplinary action could result from a student's actions on social media," wrote the school district in a statement.

It said participation in any 'ugliest girl' poll violates the district's Safe and Caring Schools policy and its social media terms of reference for students.

"In all cases where a school is aware of this type of activity, guidance support is provided to students involved as required," the statement said.
