The Nunatsiavut government says it's looking forward to construction of an underground mine at Voisey's Bay in Labrador.

It was announced on Monday that Vale sanctioned construction of the mine, making way for hundreds of jobs to build the mine as well as 350 positions once the mine is in operation. That's on top of the 450 workers who work at the current site.

In a news release Tuesday, Darryl Shiwak, minister of lands and natural resources, said the project will open up the door for future employment and economic development for the Inuit people and business.

"This announcement reaffirms Vale's commitment to ensuring long-term growth and stability at Voisey's Bay, resulting in hundreds of jobs and numerous business opportunities," said Shiwak.

Construction is expected to begin next year and production is slated to get started in 2020.
