Jonathan Richler of The Jewish Deli shows us how to make a perfect beef brisket sandwich.

Jonathan Richler got the idea for his pop-up food stand, The Jewish Deli, after he found himself missing the classic Montreal Jewish smoked meat sandwich.

"I always come back to the simple salt, sugar, fat of a good deli sandwich," said Richler.

Richler was born and raised in St. John's, and is a member of the small local Jewish community.

He moved to Montreal as an adult, where he developed a more serious interest in Jewish food.

After Richler returned to St. John's in 2010, he spent about three and a half years working on his own smoked meat recipe, adjusting his mixture of spices, and smoking and steaming times.

His hobby has now turned into The Jewish Deli.

Richler says he has added traditional Jewish and middle eastern pickles, but tries to use local ingredients on his menu as much as possible.

"It's cuisine, it's Jewish deli cuisine," he said.

Richler's favourite part of the Jewish Deli is meeting the people he feeds.

"I used to work in government, this is much more fun," he said.
