A Sci Fi On the Rock convention wouldn't be complete without Scott and Michael Parsons and their R2D2 and R2D1 droids.

The brothers from St. John's are long-time Star Wars fans, and they have built full scale, fully functional replicas of the popular characters.

"This is our first experience working in carpentry and working with metal and electronics," said Scott Parsons.

The brothers estimate they have spend hundreds of hours researching how to build and maintain their R2s, and hundreds more actually working on the machines.

The bodies of the R2s are primarily plywood, and they move with scooter motors. The sounds are managed with MP3 players and Bluetooth speakers.

The Parsons brothers bring their R2s every year to the annual Sci Fi on the Rock convention in St. John's, where the homemade droids are a big hit with sci fi fans of all ages.

"They [the fans] just love them," said Scott Parsons.

"Seeing them walk up to them and hug R2, it's really rewarding."

"With the expressions from the kids and the adults, that's what brings us here every year." added Michael Parsons.
