Accused in Nunavut Mountie death ordered to stand trial
Pingoatuk (Ping) Kolola, charged in last year's death of an RCMP officer in Kimmirut, Nunavut, has been ordered to stand trial for first-degree murder.
Nunavut court Justice Robert Kilpatrick ordered the trial Monday for Kolola, 37, for the Nov. 5, 2007, shooting death of Const. Douglas Scott.
Scott, 20, was shot while responding alone to a call about an impaired driver in the remote Baffin Island community of 400.
Kilpatrick's order for a trial came Monday at the end of a preliminary inquiry, in which he determined whether there is enough evidence to proceed with a trial.
The hearing was expected to last 10 days, but Crown prosecutors presented their witness testimony in just five days.
The Crown and Kolola's lawyers will meet again on Oct. 9, in the hopes of setting a date for the trial.
Kolola remains in custody at the Baffin Correctional Centre in Iqaluit.
