CBC's Snookie Catholique reports from Behchoko, N.W.T.

A Behchoko, N.W.T., man who survived a bison collision says by the time he saw the animal on the highway, it was too late to stop.

“I was like maybe five steps away from him, 10 steps away from him,” Joey Young says. “That’s what I’m figuring from my truck to the buffalo, and there was no way of stopping it.”

Young was on his way home from an unsuccessful moose hunt Saturday evening around 7:30. The accident took place on Highway 3 near Mosquito Creek, and Young says he’s lucky to be alive, but his pickup truck is a write-off.

It was a tough weekend for bison in the Northwest Territories. Three were hit and killed near Fort Providence.

The Department of Transportation is once again warning drivers to follow the speed limit and be aware of bison on the highway.
