Canada election 2015: Who's running in the N.W.T. riding?

For the first time in a federal election, the former Western Arctic riding will be known by its new name, simply Northwest Territories. The N.W.T. has four confirmed candidates in the Oct. 19 federal election. 

Floyd Roland

Floyd Roland is the Conservative candidate for the territory and was the only person to seek the nomination.

Roland served as the premier of the Northwest Territories from 2007 to 2011 before becoming elected mayor of Inuvik in 2012. He served as a territorial MLA for the Inuvik riding, and then the riding of Inuvik Boot Lake, from 1995 to 2011.

At a May meeting of the riding association's board of directors, Roland spoke about "the need to address the N.W.T.'s transportation and energy challenges, as well as the importance of working together to get local priorities both heard and addressed," according to a post on the association's website.

Dennis Bevington

Dennis Bevington is the NDP candidate for the Northwest Territories. He was first elected MP in 2006, serving three consecutive terms.

Originally from Fort Smith, Bevington has long been a critic of the federal government's Nutrition North program, and recently led an NDP campaign to bring the program to 50 Northern communities where the program isn't currently available. He hopes a new NDP government will make changes.

He's also cited health care, the Northern Residency Tax Deduction, and the proposed N.W.T. land and water superboard as issues on which he'll continue to focus.

Michael McLeod

​Michael McLeod won the N.W.T. Liberal nomination in August. A former MLA and the brother of N.W.T. premier Bob McLeod, Michael McLeod has been working as a tourism development officer with Industry, Tourism and Investment and sitting on a number of boards. He says he's taken leave from all of his duties to dedicate himself full-time to the campaign.

McLeod says he's focussing on a number of issues, including the high cost of living and the need for affordable housing, sustainable energy, and more attention on social justice issues such as addictions and homelessness.

John Moore

Inuvik's John Moore will represent the Green Party in the Northwest Territories riding.

A St. Francis Xavier University student, Moore arrived in Inuvik five months ago to make money while finishing his final elective course via distance learning. 

Moore was the executive director of the Inuvik Youth Centre. He's also a volunteer firefighter.
