Crown applies to have Kugluktuk man declared dangerous offender

A Yellowknife prosecutor is applying to have a man from Nunavut declared a dangerous or long-term offender, following his conviction last month for a sexual assault in the city.

Noel Avadluk Jr, 41, of Kugluktuk, was convicted in August of sexually assaulting a 56-year-old woman in her Yellowknife apartment.

In court on Monday, the prosecutor told the judge she'll request a psychiatric assessment of Avadluk. That will determine what kind of danger, if any, he presents to the public.

In addition to this recent conviction, Avadluk was previously found guilty of sexually assaulting a woman in Hay River, N.W.T., seven years ago and his long criminal record includes other violent crimes.

A dangerous offender designation could result in an indefinite prison sentence with no chance for parole for seven years, or a long-term supervision in the community order of 10 years following a regular sentence for the offence.
