Nunavut's MP says a $6.7-million investment in geoscience research should lead to big projects down the line.

Minister of Environment and Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency Leona Aglukkaq announced the funding Friday in Iqaluit.

She said it will be used to accurately map mineral deposits and said that will lead to more exploration, more jobs and ultimately more money for Nunavut and N.W.T. communities.

"Successful development in the Arctic requires scientific research, analysis, investments, and perhaps most importantly the engagement of our local communities to ensure they have the tools and skills to participate in the benefits," she said.

The funding will go to projects in Nunavut and the N.W.T. that will map bedrock, seabeds, new carving stone quarries and potential diamond kimberlites.

Nunavut's Minister of Economic Development and Transportation George Kuksuk was also at the event. He said putting money into research will bring money to the territory through exploration, and he said mining is a key part of Nunavut's future.
