Felix Taqqaugaq shooting: Nunavut coroner to hold inquest
Inquest will follow independent review being conducted by Ottawa police
Nunavut's chief coroner says her office will conduct an inquest into the death of a 29-year-old man shot by police in Igloolik three years ago.
Felix Taqqaugaq was shot by an RCMP officer during an incident in the hamlet of about 1,800 on March 20, 2012. He died from his injuries.
Nunavut RCMP have deemed the death a non-culpable homicide, meaning it was done in self defence or without intent.
An RCMP statement at the time said officers went to a man's home at around 8 p.m. to check on his well-being. The statement went on to say an adult male advanced towards officers wielding a weapon and uttering threats before he was shot by an officer.
One officer was injured in the incident, sustaining non-life threatening injuries.
Padma Suramala, Nunavut's chief coroner, says Ottawa police are in the final stages of an independent review of the incident.
Suramala says the inquest will be held once that review is completed.
