There are no lifeguards at Yellowknife's Long Lake Beach, located at Fred Henne Territorial Park. The pilot program for free lifejackets will launch in August. (CBC)

The pilot project begins early next month.

A lifejacket loaner station with about 30 children's lifejackets will be set up on the beach.

Educational materials, additional signage and comment boxes will be added in September.

The Lifesaving society is completing a safety audit at the beach. The audit comes after a 7-year-old boy drowned at the beach last month.
