The Sûreté du Québec says it is investigating the homicide of a 14-year-old girl in Inukjuak, Que, but no arrests have been made.

Sgt. Marie-Josée Ouellet said the Kativik Regional Police Force responded to a phone call saying the body of a girl had been found behind a house at around 5 p.m. on Saturday.

The Kativik Regional Police Force does not investigate homicides, so it called in the Sûreté du Québec. Investigators from Sûreté du Québec's major crimes unit have been in the community since Sunday afternoon.

Inukjuak's Mayor Pauloosie Kasudluak said it's been a difficult time for the community of about 1,800 people.

He says people in the village knew on Saturday night that a body had been found, but it took more than 24 hours for police to tell the girl's family.

"The local police couldn't tell us who it was. It was very hard to wait for the provincial police to arrive to tell us what happened," Kasudluak said in Inuktitut.

"It was very hard for everyone, especially the family members."

Sgt. Ouellet said detectives found evidence leading them to investigate the death as a homicide.
