Graham Nishikawa guides Paralympic skier to gold
Brian McKeever wins his second gold of Sochi games
Yukoner Graham Nishikawa will stand on the podium and get a gold medal alongside Paralympic cross-country skier Brian McKeever Thursday in Sochi, Russia.
Nishikawa was McKeever's guide for the visually impaired one kilometre event. McKeever, from Canmore, Alta., fell early in the race, getting tangled up with a Russian skier. But he and Nishikawa recovered to overtake the leaders for the win.
Nishikawa says they just poured on the gas.
"I mean it's super competitive and tight," he said.
"You need to get by other athletes without impeding them and lots of strategy and definitely pretty tense for myself. I'm just trying to get Brian around there without falling. He did end up falling, but it all worked out in the end and yeah, we're just super happy."
McKeever also won gold in the men's 20 kilometre visually impaired cross-country race on Monday. He may compete in the relay on the weekend and then his final race will be Sunday in the 10 kilometre skate event.
