Communities increasingly using online learning and videoconferences
Small offices run by the Gwich'in in Inuvik, Fort McPherson, Tsiigehtchic and Aklavik will soon be getting a boost.
The Gwich'in Tribal Council has received about $400,000 in federal funding to upgrade its information technology.
Robert Alexie is the president of the Gwitch'in Tribal Council. He says the funding will pay to upgrade servers, wiring and telephone systems.
"Everyone relying more and more on the internet and email. So we are hoping the new equipment will help speed it up," he says.
The Tribal Council also plans to hire new IT staff to maintain the upgrades.
Alexie says the improvements will make it easier to use video conferencing and on-line education programs in the communities.
