Benedict Corrigal, who is facing first- and second-degree murder charges after a double homicide in Hay River, N.W.T. last year, will be going to trial.

Corrigal appeared in a Yellowknife courtroom this week to determine if there's enough evidence against him to pursue the charges.

He was charged with first-degree murder in the death of Carol Buggins and one count of second-degree murder in the death of Garfield McPherson last year at the Mackenzie Place highrise.

Court records show Corrigal had a violent relationship with Buggins. He was convicted and sent to jail three times in two years for assaulting her.

A date for the trial has not yet been set.
