Saturday's fire at the construction site of Iqaluit's new airport terminal building caused at least $1 million of damage, says the city's fire chief.

Luc Grandmaison said the estimate is preliminary figure.

The roof has been patched and construction work has since resumed on the building while Nunavut's Office of the Fire Marshal continues to investigate.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.

The Government of Nunavut said the fire would not affect its share of the cost for the project, but could not say if it would have any effect on the schedule for completion of the new terminal building.

The construction of the new terminal is part of a $300 million renovation of the Iqaluit International Airport, scheduled to be completed by the end of 2017.
