Lutsel K'e Dene School renovation will restore library, brighten classrooms
The discovery of mould interrupted a renovation that had been in the works for years
The discovery of mould in the Lutsel K'e Dene School Thursday interrupted a renovation that had been in the works for years.
The school's principal, Vivian Harris, says the general layout will remain the same but classrooms will be getting a facelift.
"The classrooms are kind of going to be the same, but what they're doing is putting more glass in between, so it's kind of more of an open concept," she said.
"I think the kids will appreciate the building a little bit more."
Harris says she looks forward to the open space, and "just having the sunlight coming through the windows a little bit more, brightening things up."
The renovations, which began in August, will also return the library to the school and the community.
"There used to be a library, but it got shut down because we needed the space for classes," said Harris. "So that will be up and running, and it will be like a community library."
The library will be in the foyer of the gym, and aside from books it will feature DVDs, public computers, and seating areas "so that people can curl up and read a book," says Harris.
The renovation was meant to happen in half the school at a time while classes were ongoing in the other half, but the discovery of mould in the building means the school is now looking for somewhere to hold classes in the meantime.
