No injuries as Dawson City fire destroys home
Fire struck around 1:30 p.m. on Pierre Berton Drive; nobody was home at the time
There were no injuries when fire broke out at a house off of the Dome Road in Dawson City on Tuesday, but the house couldn't be saved.
The fire occurred around 1:30 p.m. on Pierre Berton Drive. Nobody was home at the time.
Dawson City Fire Chief Jim Regimbal says when he arrived, flames were licking-up the side of the house.
By the time support crews arrived, they were looking at containing the fire.
"We wanted to minimize the chance of any exposure to the surrounding area and the trees," he said. "It's a pretty dry area and it's pretty crispy out there."
Regimbal says about 25 firefighters from Dawson and surrounding areas helped battle the fire.
He believes it was accidental and started on the deck of the house.
"It's a sombre event when all is said and done and you're standing back looking at the devastation," he said.
On the flip side, he noted that it's amazing to see people come together to help others out.
"Where else do you have a community where you have two firefighters from Sunnydale who canoed across the river to come and assist and help with this fire?"
