Nunavut actor, Natar Ungalaaq, begins work on feature film
New film tells a story of first encounters with outsiders
The award-winning Inuk actor, Natar Ungalaaq, has begun casting calls in Igloolik, Nunavut, in the search for actors to appear in his new feature film.
Ungalaaq — best known for his starring roles in Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner and The Necessities of Life — will co-direct Searchers: Maliinaqputit with Kinguliit Productions.
Ungalaaq says the 90-minute fiction will be a mix of happiness, love, murder and mystery.
"Back in the 1900s, when people all over the world started coming to the North in large ships and brought guns and steel tools that you would only find in the South, these were being introduced to Inuit,” he says. “We tell a story about these encounters.”
Ungalaaq says the Igloolik casting sessions are seeking people of all ages who speak Inuktitut.
The film will include subtitles.
Filming begins in March, and the film should be ready in the fall of 2016.
