A Nunavut court judge has found Ian Taptuna, the son of Premier Peter Taptuna, guilty of sexual interference.

Justice Beverly Browne delivered her verdict in the Nunavut Court of Justice in Iqaluit Friday.

Ian Taptuna, 24, went on trial Thursday facing charges of sexual assault and sexual interference.

The complainant, a 10-year-old girl, alleged Ian Taptuna sexually assaulted her in February. Taptuna argued it was all a misunderstanding and he was just tucking her into bed.

Premier Peter Taptuna's office issued a statement Friday: "This is a very difficult situation for all involved, and we continue to request privacy."

Ian Taptuna had no comment as he left the courthouse. He is out on bail and cannot have contact with the victim.

A sentencing hearing has been set for Sept. 2.
