Nunavut to develop food security plan
Plan should be in place by spring 2013
The Nunavut Food Security Coalition will develop a food security strategy by the spring of 2013.
The plan will be made after the territory’s first food security symposium, which will be held in January.
"Partners will be signing on to say we're going to work together in these ways over the next several years to achieve these impacts and we're committed to measuring these outcomes to ensure that we really, truly make a difference on this issue," said Jennifer Wakegijig, a territorial nutritionist and one of the group's leaders.
The coalition is made up of the four Inuit organizations and the Nunavut government. Some non-governmental organizations, as well as two major retailers are also part of the Food Security Coalition.
Nunavut has seen several protests about high food costs over the past year.
