Nunavut RCMP have charged a 30-year-veteran of the force, Sgt. Paul Marenchuk, with two counts of assault with a weapon.

The charges stem from two separate incidents, alleged to have occurred in August and September 2015 in Pond Inlet.

Nunavut RCMP say they learned of the two alleged assaults through an internal review involving two prisoners at the Pond Inlet Detachment.

They handed the case over to investigators from Alberta and Crown prosecutors in Yukon later recommended that charges be laid.

RCMP say an internal Code of Conduct investigation is ongoing.

Marenchuk is scheduled to appear in court in Pond Inlet on July 19. He's currently suspended with pay.

He has more than 30 years of service with the RCMP and has been working at the Pond Inlet detachment since 2012.
