A dog in Naujaat, Nunavut, has been put down after it was suspected to have rabies, the territory's Department of Health says.

The dog, which has been sent out for testing, attacked other dogs in the community and was euthanized on Monday.

In a news release Thursday, the department says if anyone has been bitten or scratched by a fox or a dog they should go to the health centre immediately.

"Treatment must be started quickly after exposure, as rabies infections are almost always fatal," the release says.

Pets that spend time outdoors should also be monitored for signs of rabies, it states.

"Signs of rabies include behaving strangely, aggressively, staggering, frothing at the mouth, choking, or making strange noises."

Animals exhibiting those signs should be reported to the Regional Environmental Health Office.
