20-year-old man dies after altercation at party

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police are investigating the suspicious death of a 20-year-old man at a house party in Yellowknife over the weekend.

Shortly after midnight on Friday Aug. 24th, 2013, the RCMP's Yellowknife detachment responded to a service call from a home in the city's Frame Lake South area.

"A 20-year-old male was reported to be in need of medical attention after an altercation at a house party," the RCMP said in a release.  "The male was transported to Stanton Territorial Hospital by ambulance and then transferred to Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton."

The next day, the 20-year-old man died, the RCMP said. RCMP spokesman Cpl. Barry Ledoux says it's still too early to confirm exactly what happened and if any charges will be laid in the death.

The victim's name is not being released at this time, at the request of his family, but he was not originally from Yellowknife. He was working as a summer student at Air Tindi.

Police are treating the death as suspicious and anyone with information is asked to contact the Yellowknife RCMP at 867-669-1111.
