Residents of Upper Liard area told to prepare for flooding

Yukon Community Services is advising people in low-lying parts of the Upper Liard area to prepare for possible flooding.

In its latest report, the department says an above-normal snow pack makes flooding of the Liard River likely. It says peak water levels normally occur in the first week of June.

Community Services is advising residents to watch levels on the Liard River closely. It is also advising people living in low-lying areas to move their possessions to higher ground.

The same region suffered extensive flooding two years ago, when 35 people had to leave their homes, and parts of the Alaska Highway were washed out between Teslin and Watson Lake.
