Skagway ferry dock re-floated
The state ferry dock in Skagway, Alaska, was brought back to the surface Tuesday night and does not appear to have sustained any structural damage from its sinking last week.
State ferry service still cancelled until May 9
The state ferry dock in Skagway, Alaska, was brought back to the surface Tuesday night.
The Alaska Marine Highway System says testing and inspection of the dock must be done, so ferry service to Skagway will remain cancelled until next Friday.
Engineers say a line that runs under the dock to supply water to the ferry ruptured and flooded concrete flotation chambers under the structure.
"From the engineers we've learned that that's what they believe caused this situation," said Skagway's municipal manager, Scott Hahn. "It does not appear to have sustained any structural damage and we believe it will be back in service next week so we are very excited about that."
