A public health advisory has been issued due to smoke in Norman Wells and Tulita from wildfires in the region.

A 1,000 hectare fire is 20 kilometres from Norman Wells. Crews are working to limit the fire's growth to the south. The N.W.T. Department of Environment and Natural Resources says fires pose no threat to people or buildings in the Sahtu region.

N.W.T.'s chief public health officer says exposure to smoke can result in sore eyes, tears, cough and runny nose. People at higher risk include young children, women who are pregnant, the elderly and people with diabetes, lung or heart conditions.

The health department says people can reduce the risk of exposure by avoiding strenuous activities outdoors and by staying indoors with windows and doors closed.

It advises people to see their health care provider if they are experiencing symptoms such as wheezing, chest discomfort, or shortness of breath.
