Southern Lakes residents start online survey on Yukon Energy plan

A committee of people who live in Yukon's Southern Lakes area have started a survey about a Yukon Energy plan to hold back water in the system to generate more electricity.

Yukon Energy says holding back additional water in the autumn, over the 500 square kilometre area, could produce six megawatts of extra electrical energy. A Yukon Energy official says that doesn't mean raising water levels.

Deborah Fulmer is a member of the Yukon Southern Lakes Water Level Committee, which has started a survey for people living close to shoreline.

"We do not have any baseline information," she said. "We did ask the local residents about their areas of interest or their areas of concern in regards to this."

Fulmer says the committee is hoping to hear from anyone living on Tagish, Marsh and Bennett Lakes and a community meeting will be held to review survey results.
