Event in Inuvik to mark beginning of construction of all-season road

Stephen Harper’s office has confirmed the prime minister will attend a ceremony to mark the beginning of construction of the Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk Highway on Wednesday.

N.W.T. Premier Bob McLeod, along with a number of cabinet ministers, will also be in Inuvik for the event.

The event will mark the start of the four-year construction of the highly anticipated all-weather road to the Arctic Coast.

It starts at noon at the Midnight Sun Recreation Complex.

The plan is for a photo opportunity with the people working on the highway project. That will happen on the edge of Navy Road where construction on the all-weather road will begin in the coming weeks.

Harper is not staying in the North long. It's expected he'll leave Inuvik in the afternoon.

There will also be a second event in Inuvik Wednesday. The N.W.T. premier and cabinet ministers will cut the ribbon at Inuvik's new liquefied natural gas facility.
