A worker died at an Inuvik construction site yesterday after the heavy machinery he was operating rolled over.

A worker died at an Inuvik construction site yesterday after the heavy machinery he was operating rolled over.

It happened on the access road being constructed for the new satellite facility on Airport Road.

Jim Sawkins, director of Protective Services for the Town of Inuvik, said the fire department got the call at 3:22 p.m.

"Upon arrival at the scene, it became evident that a piece of heavy machine had rolled over on the sole occupant of the vehicle," he said.

Sawkins said by the time he and 12 firefighters arrived, other crew members at the job site had freed the deceased man from the vehicle.

The RCMP, the Worker's Safety and Compensation Commission and N.W.T.'s chief coroner are investigating the incident.

The man's name has not yet been released.
