Wildfires burning about an hour south of Behchokǫ̀, N.W.T., triggered a warning from the government to travellers Wednesday: visibility might be bad in the afternoon, and the fires could reach the highway in the next 24 hours.

In an afternoon notice, N.W.T. Fire wrote that there are two fires involved, between kilometres 166 and 176 of Highway 3.

N.W.T. Fire said its firefighters are currently working on other high-priority fires in the North Slave that are closer to communities.

"[We] will reassess response to these wildfires as we continue to address the numerous new lightning starts," it wrote.

There is also a wildfire burning 20 kilometres west of the Tłı̨chǫ all-season road that could make for smoky conditions on that road.

That fire is further away than it looks from the road, N.W.T. Fire said.
