A search and rescue effort has begun near the community of Whale Cove, Nunavut, as searchers look for an overdue hunter.

George Ulurksit, 47, was last seen around 10:00 a.m. on Nov. 15, approximately 30 kilometres west of Whale Cove, according to an RCMP news release.

It's believed Ulurksit did not have a SPOT device or any communication equipment with him, police said, and "was not completely prepared for a long excursion."

RCMP were advised Tuesday evening that Ulurksit was overdue and had separated from his hunting partner in poor weather. Local search and rescue teams have been searching the area, but have also been hindered by inclement weather.

Local searches are continuing in coordination with Nunavut Emergency Preparedness and RCMP.

The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre has been contacted for assistance, but weather continues to hinder search efforts.
