Whitehorse moves towards accessibility rules for recreation sites

The City of Whitehorse wants to write accessibility standards into its leases with recreation facilities, after hearing that some people with mobility issues have a hard time using the ball park facilities.

"I think it is the right thing to do, to look for ways to increase accessibility," said councillor John Streicker.

Whitehorse City councillors voted unanimously Monday night to change a lease agreement between the city and Softball Yukon, requiring the organization to review accessibility at the Pepsi Softball Centre and the Robert Service ball diamonds. 

Update all recreation leases, says councillor

Councillor Jocelyn Curteanu brought forward a motion to update all municipal recreation lease agreements so that accessibility is examined before they're renewed.

"Our population is growing in age and there are other people who also have disabilities or challenges and we should be able to do whatever we can, as I always say, to make it an inclusive society."

City manager Christine Smith says it's possible to have this written into leases. The motion will be reviewed by city administration.
