A Whitehorse woman has been issued with the city's first-ever chicken coop permit, after a long battle over backyard chickens.

Three years ago bylaw officers ordered Kristina Calhoun to get rid of her small flock after a neighbour complained about noise.

Kristina Calhoun has been issued with the city's first-ever chicken coop permit, after a long battle over backyard chickens.

This week city bylaw officers inspected Calhoun's backyard chicken coop and pronounced it fit to house her six baby chicks.

"It's great. In five or six months I'll be getting my own fresh eggs again and stop having to buy eggs."

Calhoun petitioned city hall after losing her original brood and won a partial victory. A new city bylaw allows city residents to keep a maximum of six female chicks, but bans roosters because of the noise.

Calhoun says she'd like to keep even more chicks, but says she's still happy to have six.
