The City of Yellowknife has announced a ban on most fires, effective as of 5 p.m. Wednesday.

In a news release Wednesday afternoon, the city wrote that the fire ban is due to "extremely dry conditions" and will stay in place until further notice. Fire danger for the area was listed by N.W.T. Fire as "high" Wednesday afternoon and was expected to be listed as "extreme" Thursday.

Open-air burning, including in approved fire pits, and fireworks are prohibited.

People can still use camp stoves, enclosed barbecues, propane appliances and outdoor propane burners used within a fire pit.
