Man charged with murder after Dettah assault

Yellowknife RCMP announced Thursday afternoon that Stanley Abel Jr. has been charged with murder in connection with an incident early Wednesday morning in Dettah.

A man has been charged with murder in connection with an incident early Wednesday morning in Dettah, Northwest Territories. 

Stanley Abel, Jr., 30, was charged with the murder of his uncle, Herman Abel, in a Yellowknife courtroom this afternoon.

According to an RCMP news release, police received a call just after 4 a.m. Wednesday about a disturbance at a home in Dettah. Officers found a "grievously injured" man at the home, according to the release, who was then taken to Stanton Territorial Hospital by ambulance.

Police arrested Stanley Abel Jr. Wednesday afternoon at a home in Yellowknife in connection with the assault.

Thursday morning RCMP announced the victim had died, and upgraded their investigation from aggravated assault to a homicide.

Stanley Abel Jr. remains in police custody and is expected back in court tomorrow.
