Plans for a new parking lot are underway as old spaces were lost for the construction of Betty House.

Yellowknife's Northern United Place, home of the city's Aurora College campus and residence, has plans for a new parking lot.

The building lost access to 50 parking spots last month when the city closed off the lot for the construction of the Betty House, a transitional housing facility for homeless women. Since then, students and residents of the college building have had to find other places to park.

Gail Leonardis, Northern United Place's property manager, says plans are in the works for up to 26 new parking spots.

"We're looking to take the property that we own on the other side of Northern United Place and turn it into a parking lot so that we can provide some of that lost parking for the users of the building," she said.

The building, commonly referred to as the little brown house, will be demolished this fall if city council approves the property to be rezoned as a parking lot.
