Members of the Yellowknife Ski Club will vote next week on a motion to support a bid to host the 2023 Canada Winter Games.

If the motion passes, club president John Stephenson says the group would then address Yellowknife City Council.

Stephenson says hosting the games would mean improvements to its facilities and trails, and also help foster young athletes.

"These games always have a springboard effect on youth and on other athletes watching the games, participating in the trials that lead up to the games, and in participating in the many events that will follow the games," he said.

City council will decide in the next few weeks if it will make a bid for Yellowknife to host the games.

The Yellowknife Chamber of Commerce has told city councillors Yellowknife shouldn't host the games, citing concerns about an increase in taxes as well as the city's capacity to host the games.
